Manchester Evening News has reported that Manchester United ended the summer transfer window without signing any new players. Despite preparing for a return to the Champions League, United's summer transfer spending remains less than that of newly promoted Ipswich.

United's biggest signing came last week when Brighton midfielder Baleba joined for an initial fee of £65 million, potentially rising to £70 million.

The Red Devils invested primarily in midfielders. Andrey Santos joined from Chelsea for £48 million, potentially rising to £50 million; Youri Tielemans arrived from Aston Villa for £35 million. Beyond midfield, United made no significant investments.

Goalkeeper Darlow joined on a free transfer as backup to André Onana. United also paid £4 million for young winger Toby Collyer from Tottenham, a figure that could rise to £8 million. This brings United's total summer spending to approximately £152 million; additionally, Kristian Oroszko's transfer fee was not disclosed, and United must also pay Swansea a development compensation fee for Jack Haynes.

United considered completing a late deal for left-back Romain Aït-Nouri from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The player's representatives indicated he could leave, but United only wanted a long-term loan, while Wolverhampton wanted a mandatory purchase clause included. Due to significant disagreement, the deal ultimately fell through.

Compared to other Premier League rivals, United has clearly fallen behind. Their Manchester rivals Manchester City had the highest spending in the Premier League this summer, reaching £454.2 million. This includes signing Enzo Fernandez for £125 million on deadline day and purchasing Sérhou Guirassy for £60 million, potentially rising to £65 million. City's spending in a single day far exceeded United's entire summer transfer window.

Tottenham is another club that spent over £300 million, investing £386.5 million this summer with the goal of returning to the Champions League.

Liverpool spent most of their £247.5 million on striker Ousmane Diomande from Paris Saint-Germain, while Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, spent £198.5 million. Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Newcastle also spent more than United, with expenditures of £290.8 million, £280.8 million, and £273.7 million respectively.

Even more concerning for United is that their spending was even surpassed by newly promoted Ipswich Town. Ipswich spent £171 million on summer transfers, hoping to secure Premier League survival this season.

United could still strengthen their squad, but currently can only sign free agents. The transfer window will reopen on January 1, 2027.
