Barcelona requires additional financing to complete the Camp Nou renovation project due to financial structural constraints.

The market is closely monitoring the financial progress of Barcelona's Camp Nou renovation project. According to the latest financial data submitted to Spain's National Securities Market Commission (CNMV), which covers information through the first half of 2026, numerous investors have contributed funding. The Espai Barça fund, managed by Goldman Sachs, has invested €1.16289 billion in the project, yet only approximately half of the work has been completed.
While the first two floors of the stadium have been renovated and reopened, the third floor still requires reconstruction and must be restarted from scratch. The stadium roof has also not been completed. This means Barcelona will need to temporarily relocate to Montjuïc Stadium for the new season. Regarding Palau Blaugrana, the new arena that is a key component of the Camp Nou project, there has been no significant progress since the club released preliminary designs before the March elections.
Compared to data from December 31, total investment in the project has increased by €153.6 million, reaching €1.163 billion. This indicates that investment spending remains steady as the project advances. According to the latest publicly available data, the fund's available liquidity decreased from €240.03 million in December 2025 to €141.2 million, a decline of nearly €100 million.
The primary reason for the disparity between the €153.6 million investment and the liquidity decline is that the fund avoided cash depletion by temporarily withdrawing €74.4 million. As a result, although the fund disbursed €153.6 million to engineering works, its actual cash decreased by only €988,200. These payments are made progressively after work is completed and certified.
As of June 30, the Espai Barça fund held €141.2 million, though the project remains incomplete. However, total project costs exceed this amount. Since investors did not provide all promised capital at once but rather disbursed funds progressively as work was certified, Barcelona used its regular budget to cover funding gaps and prevent renovation delays. Ferran Olivé, the finance director of president Laporta's board, acknowledged this fact in an interview with ARA.
Adding the cost overruns, the project deficit has reached nearly €400 million, and the club urgently needs additional financing to complete the project. Camp Nou is Barcelona's primary asset and is expected to generate revenue both now and in the future. At the upcoming general assembly later this month, the club will seek member approval for an additional €500 million debt authorization, of which €210 million will be issued as bonds.
The new Camp Nou stadium generated €56 million in interest payments. Relying solely on €1.474 billion raised from debt-financed funds since 2023 has proven insufficient to complete the stadium construction. The initial tranche distributed in late May 2023 was €987 million, followed by an additional €424 million, with €84 million in subordinated loans.
The total fund holds nearly €1.5 billion, of which €1.163 billion has been disbursed for certified engineering work, representing 78.9% of total funds. €141.2 million remains in the account at 9.6%. €42.49 million is allocated for other assets and receivables at 2.9%. €127.52 million has been used for interest, fees, exchange rate differences, and startup costs at 8.6%. Through mid-2026, the Espai Barça debt and equity structure remains precisely aligned with these proportions.
The CNMV documentation also notes that the fund's debt repayment performance is normal. Through June 2026, the default rate, doubtful asset rate, and non-performing loan rate are all 0%, indicating that Barcelona is strictly adhering to its payment schedule. Liquidity continues to be converted into project expenses, and the fund records revenue from securitized debt proceeds tied to the stadium's future operations to cover the cost of issued debt.
The fund has recovered approximately €55.93 million in such property income from the club, which exceeds the €45.52 million in interest paid during the same period. This means the new Camp Nou stadium has contributed approximately €56 million toward covering debt interest since reopening. However, the club has not repaid any principal.
