Enzo Le Fee's late penalty rescued a point for Sunderland following a pulsating 1-1 draw against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. 

The Black Cats were awarded a penalty after Keane Lewis-Potter wrestled Wilson Isidor to the ground, with Le Fee rolling his spot kick into the bottom-right corner, eight minutes from time.

Sunderland's equaliser cancelled out Vitaly Janelt's 57th-minute strike, with both sides seeing goals ruled out by VAR.

Lewis-Potter should have given Brentford the lead in the fifth minute following a short corner routine, but the full-back saw his close-range attempt blocked, while Dan Ballard saw a goal ruled out two minutes later after debutant Kevin Danso was adjudged to have been offside.

Moments into the second half, Igor Thiago’s downward header was thwarted by Robin Roefs. The home side then took the lead after Janelt arrowed a first-time effort into the top-left corner after Nordi Mukiele failed to clear Lewis-Potter’s delivery.

Lewis-Potter almost doubled the scoreline minutes later, but the Brentford player’s volley bounced into the ground before flying over the woodwork. Jaidon Anthony thought he had scored Brentford’s second, but it was disallowed after Roefs was fouled at the near post.

However, Le Fee had the last say, rolling his spot kick into the bottom-right corner, after a lack of concentration from Lewis-Potter in the 18-yard box. 


Le Fee comes to the rescue for Black Cats

In what was an absorbing contest at the Gtech, Brentford were minutes away from sealing the three points. However, Le Fee had other ideas.

The Frenchman, who rattled the right-hand post in the first half, showed the composure to roll his spot kick past Kelleher, who dived the other way. 

Le Fee has now scored his first goal of the 2026-27 Premier League campaign, and against Brentford, he registered three shots with one on target, reflected by an expected goals (xG) of 0.86. 

For Brentford, they registered 12 shots with two on target, with an expected goals (xG) of 1.26, whereas Sunderland mustered 14 shots with five on target, highlighted by an xG of 1.85. 

The Bees performed well below standards in the first half, having failed to record a shot on target in the first half at the Gtech for the first time since October 2025. That resulted in Keith Andrews making three changes at the half-time break, however Brentford continue their unbeaten start to the campaign, having won once and drawn twice.
