Newcastle United's sporting director Ross Wilson revealed the club had prepared for manager Eddie Howe's departure several months prior, during a summer transfer window that "never felt chaotic internally".

Howe resigned abruptly in July, with Fabian Schär quickly taking over and maintaining an unbeaten record during his tenure.

Howe's departure marked one of several upheavals for Newcastle United during the summer, as key players including Bruno Guimarães, Tonali, and Anthony Gordon also left the club.

Wilson revealed that Howe's resignation was not "painful" because the club had contingency plans in place for Schär; however, Guimarães' £75 million transfer to Arsenal was not part of the plan.

"Eddie is an exceptionally talented manager, and at some point, he was likely to move on to another opportunity, and we had to prepare for that," Wilson said.

"It wasn't painful. Clearly, the timing wasn't in our plans. But we had solutions in place, which allowed us to adapt so quickly.

"This might surprise some people, but the reason we could act so quickly is because we'd been preparing for months."

Wilson added: "I think Newcastle should be a club that creates expectation and excitement. If not, then we're doing something wrong.

"[This summer] internally never felt chaotic. There's no point in pretending otherwise—we didn't want to lose Bruno Guimarães. Having to ultimately accept that was genuinely disappointing.

"In terms of numbers, we're satisfied with the final outcome, but that wasn't our plan. However, everything else that happened in the transfer window was according to plan."

Wilson believes that for Newcastle to succeed in the future, the club must continue to trade players in the transfer market, and this summer's ups and downs have validated that approach.

Newcastle generated nearly £250 million from player sales while signing eight players aged 24 or under, with the notable arrivals of Nicolás González and Fernández Pardo proving particularly interesting.

"If you want to be a successful Premier League club, you have to buy and sell players; if you don't, it's difficult to be a successful Premier League club," Wilson said.

"We have to do this. If we don't, we'll just keep the current squad, players will continuously age, achieve less success, and eventually leave without us getting anything in return."

Newcastle was fined £5.2 million for violating UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations, with £6 million of the penalty suspended on the condition of future compliance.
