Liverpool legend Carragher is reserved about Araujo's arrival, believing he possesses top-tier qualities alongside clear shortcomings.

Araujo has not yet officially begun his Liverpool career, but the transfer has already sparked discussion in England. Liverpool legend and one of the most influential commentators in English football, Jamie Carragher, analyzed the Uruguayan centre-back's arrival and clearly expressed his doubts.
Carragher admits the deal makes sense from both a sporting and financial perspective, especially given Liverpool's defensive shortage. The team's defence is currently severely depleted, with Konaté's departure and injuries leaving Van Dijk as the only fully fit senior centre-back. Araujo's arrival does fill a genuine void.
Carragher does not deny Araujo's ability. "Araujo is a beast, with excellent physical attributes, strong aggression, capable of playing both centre-back and right-back, and possesses top-level experience. He captained Barcelona and played in crucial matches," Carragher stated.
The former England international believes the loan format reduces Liverpool's risk. The club can use one season to observe whether Araujo adapts to the Premier League's pace and Arne Slot's tactical demands before deciding whether to commit long-term. "A loan is low-risk. You try him for a year, see if he adapts to Slot, and if it works out, you buy him permanently. This approach makes sense—filling a void without overstretching the budget," Carragher noted.
However, the positives end there. As Carragher delved deeper, his reservations surfaced. Carragher believes Araujo's main issue is not his physicality but certain tactical and psychological aspects of his game. "Passion is good, and he's aggressive in tackles, but at this level, defending is about decision-making, concentration, and reading the game," Carragher explained.
It is here that Carragher believes Araujo has exposed too many flaws in recent seasons at Barcelona. "In too many matches against top teams, he loses concentration, gives away needless penalties, or gets sent off. The Premier League is unforgiving—one lapse in concentration will be punished," Carragher warned.
Araujo's record in certain Champions League matches weighs against him. The red card against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2024 Champions League quarter-final remains one of the most painful moments of his Barcelona career. Carragher also highlighted Araujo's performances in other high-intensity matches where his mistakes harmed the team. In his view, these errors make it difficult for Liverpool to predict which version of Araujo they will get. "He has long-standing issues with consistency and discipline, and his form has declined," Carragher emphasised.
Carragher also cited Barcelona's current situation to explain his scepticism. Araujo's status in Barcelona's defence has declined in recent years, with the rise of Cubarsí playing a decisive role. The academy prospect quickly earned the coaching staff's trust and has surpassed Araujo in many key matches. Carragher had previously criticised this situation strongly: "Liverpool should sign a more established centre-back rather than choose a player who has consistently been a substitute behind 19-year-old Cubarsí."
He reiterated this point today. "Coming here on loan after being told he couldn't start for Barcelona... this looks more like damage control than a marquee signing," Carragher stated.
The former defender prefers a more permanent solution: "I would rather see a long-term signing that can integrate into the system."
However, Carragher stopped short of passing final judgment on Araujo before seeing him play in England. He acknowledges that Araujo's physical attributes suit the Premier League well, and the loan format protects Liverpool if his performance disappoints. But his conclusion fully reflects doubts surrounding this signing. "Let's see him play first, but I'm not excited yet," Carragher concluded.
Araujo arrives at Anfield with a significant opportunity to regain the starting position he lost at Barcelona. He has the physicality, speed, aggression, and experience to make an impact. But to convince Carragher—and perhaps sections of the Anfield crowd—he must prove a more crucial point: that he can eliminate the lapses in concentration that have haunted him in the most critical matches of his career.
