Van de Ven: Overall we didn't play too badly; supporting teammates as captain is very important

In Matchday 2 of the Premier League, Tottenham suffered a 0-2 home defeat to Newcastle. After the match, Tottenham captain Micky van de Ven spoke to the club's official media.

Micky, thanks for taking the time to speak with us. Your thoughts on today's match.

It was a difficult match. You always hope to get three points, but unfortunately we couldn't achieve that. However, overall, I don't think our performance was poor. We created a lot of chances and there were many positive aspects, but there are also areas we need to improve. The important thing is that we must work hard to address these issues.

What do you regret most?

Obviously that we weren't able to win the match.

From a tactical perspective, for much of the match you controlled possession and showed good control. How do you reconcile the contrast between how the match unfolded and the final result, given that you conceded two goals?

As you said, we controlled possession well and had a lot of the ball. We also created many chances in the first half. I think the same applied in the second half, and at times our attacks were very dangerous. But then they scored, and the complexion of the match changed somewhat. I think this is an area where we can continue to improve – after conceding, we need to react better.

As I said, there are also many positives we can take from today. If we only focus on the negatives right now, clearly that won't help the situation improve.

I think today we showed some positive things. Of course, the things we didn't do well are areas we need to keep working on. We will train hard every day, continuously improve and make things better.

At this stage, perhaps a bit of patience is needed?

Patience is needed, and hard work too. I think belief is also very important.

On such a difficult day, there was a personal moment for you that's worth mentioning. As club captain, you led the team out at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League. Can you describe how that moment felt?

I know this result is disappointing, but leading the team out at this incredible stadium for such a great club is a huge responsibility and also a tremendous honor.

Of course, at the end of today's match, what I wanted most was three points. But personally, it was still a very proud moment for me, and there's much more to achieve in the future.

I'd like to know how your role has changed now that you're captain. After today's match and in the coming days, as captain, how much responsibility do you feel you have to help the team overcome this setback?

Supporting your teammates is very important. I think even if you're not captain, this is something you should do. But when you wear the armband, players can expect you to take on more responsibility, so you need to perform better.
