According to The Athletic, Richarlison is considering legal action against Tottenham to terminate his contract.

The Brazilian player has been in a difficult position since being excluded from Tottenham's 25-man Premier League squad a week ago.

Tottenham has been unable to find a buyer for Richarlison. Before the Premier League transfer window closed, he came close to returning to former club Everton, but the two sides could not agree on terms. Trabzonspor subsequently expressed interest in him before Turkey's transfer window closed.

In the final days of the English transfer window, Richarlison posted several cryptic messages on social media about his future.

"After going through so much over the past few years, I've decided I will never let anyone else decide my future again," he wrote. "I've been through terrible things, almost all because of other people's decisions. Pressure, threats, retaliation – these things won't scare me. I've been through worse, believe me."

De Zerbi named Richarlison in the starting lineup for Tottenham's opening match against Brentford but has not used him since. The manager has made clear his stance, believing Richarlison is responsible for finding a solution.

De Zerbi said at a press conference last week: "Richarlison made every decision himself. He spoke to me at the start of the season and said he wanted to leave. I only want to keep players who want to stay, are proud to be here, and have the right passion to be here."

Now, after being excluded from Tottenham's Premier League squad for the season, Richarlison and his team are exploring the possibility of terminating his remaining contract with Tottenham through legal means. Richarlison has one year left on his Tottenham contract, which he signed in 2022 when he joined from Everton for an initial fee of £50 million.

According to FIFA's updated Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, in theory, either party can terminate a contract if there is "just cause." The regulations define this as "any circumstance such that it is no longer possible or reasonable to ask that one of the parties continue maintaining the contractual relationship."

FIFA's rules also state that no club shall "use registration or de-registration of a player as a means of putting pressure" on them, nor shall they "improperly prevent a player from training with the senior squad."

In Brazil, Richarlison has been linked with Vasco da Gama by local media. If his contract with Tottenham is terminated, he would be free to join Vasco da Gama without Tottenham requiring any transfer fee negotiations. Brazil's transfer window closes early Saturday morning.
