Just two days after sacking himself as Billericay Town manager, owner Glenn Tamplin has made a dramatic U-turn to retake the reins until the end of the season.

The outspoken chairman had made a bold claim on Twitter ahead of last weekend's game, claiming that if his side lost and were knocked out of the FA Trophy, he would sack himself and move to one side.

They did lose and Tamplin kept his word, moving to assistant manager while appointing first team coach Harry Wheeler as the new boss.

Never one to avoid the headlines, Tamplin is now back in the spotlight again after reneging on his initial decision and reinstating himself as top dog.

In a statement posted on the club's website on Tuesday, it was revealed that the decision was down to both the players and the coaching staff.

It read: 'After two days of meetings with the players, coaching and internal staff after Saturday's game we as a club have made a unanimous decision that Glenn Tamplin will see the club through as manager until the end of this current season.

'The players have insisted Glenn stay on to see them through what has proved to be a low point for the club with 3 losses in 4 games.

'With two cup finals and the league ours to lose the players insisted it can and will be a successful season but with Glenn in charge.

'Glenn has high expectations and the demands he puts on himself are not always achievable and he knows the demands were elevating stress for himself and his players. Harry Wheeler will be appointed Team Manager at the end of this season.'

Tamplin himself also later took to Twitter, writing: 'Time to bounce back and see what we all are made off tonight happy to still be in charge and not let go until end season.

'Didn't feel right as things were going wrong to step down people that matter in the club made it clear not to go 3 points tonight back to winning ways BTFC.'

Billericay Town are currently top of the Isthmian League Premier Division by one point - with seven games in hand on their nearest rivals - but have been going through a barren spell in terms of wins.

As such, according to quotes from Tamplin in a local newspaper, he asked players to give up a week's wages after their latest defeat - then resigned when they refused.

He said: 'When I asked the players to give up a week's wages for the way they have performed in the last seven days they didn't consider me. Why should I consider them?

'They are not matching my investment. We are not getting the results for what I am paying, so I am stepping down.'

Tamplin bought the club in December 2016, and has provided hefty investment in a bid to fire them up the leagues.

The club  drew national attention for signing a number of former Premier League players including Paul Konchesky, Jamie O'Hara and Jermaine Pennant, although all three have now left the club.

It is not the first time Twitter has landed Tamplin in hot water - after Billericay lost the season opener against Kingstonian he quit the site and said he would not return until the end of the season, but was tweeting again a few days later.
