According to Bild, Lahm believes that Klopp's appointment is not enough to immediately get the German national team back on track.

The captain of the 2014 World Cup-winning team stated in an interview with Welt am Sonntag that the new German national team coach might bring an initial improvement: "Things could improve quickly. Klopp is very experienced. In my judgment, he will stick to his system. I don't think he will do many experiments. But if we want to return to the world's top ranks long-term, we must answer one question: What exactly does German football mean?"

Lahm criticized in Welt am Sonntag: "We lack such clear ideas. We always take different paths, and as a result, we lose our identity. This is a problem for all of German football."

Lahm also called for stronger guidance from the German Football Association: "The association should provide clearer direction." Lahm himself is currently leading a summer camp through his foundation for 80 children from social institutions.
