Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard remains puzzled by the club's decision to sell Neco Williams in the summer of 2022. While commentating for TNT Sports during Liverpool's match against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, he praised the development of the former Red and made it clear that Liverpool should have retained him.

Gerrard said Williams' professionalism and performance have been consistently excellent: "He's always like that in training and matches. He comes to training every day and does everything perfectly. He's extremely professional and a real winner. He's strong, ambitious and very competitive. As for his talent, we've known about that for a long time."

Gerrard managed Liverpool's academy from 2017 to 2018, so he knows Williams well. According to him, if talent is combined with professionalism, Williams has every chance of establishing himself as a long-term Premier League player.

"In my opinion, he's an excellent fullback. I don't say this lightly; I'd even apologize to Nottingham Forest fans: in my view, Liverpool should have kept him."

Williams came through Liverpool's academy and made his senior debut under Klopp in 2020. However, due to fierce internal competition, he never managed to become a regular starter. In January 2022, he was loaned to Fulham, and subsequently joined Nottingham Forest permanently. Statistics show he made only 33 appearances for Liverpool's first team.

Since joining Forest, Williams has had more playing time and has gradually become an important player for the club. Now 25 years old, his contract with Forest runs until 2029, and there have recently been reports linking him with Tottenham Hotspur.

However, Williams himself is not distracted by transfer speculation. "I just focus on where I am now, which is Forest. I can't do anything more than that," he told TNT Sports in an interview.
