Sunderland registered their first Premier League win of the season courtesy of Wilson Isidor, who came off the bench to secure a 1-0 victory over Fulham. 

The Black Cats were denied their first point in the dying minutes against newly promoted Ipswich Town last weekend, but it was a different story at the Stadium of Light. 

Isidor, fresh from signing a new deal with Sunderland, combined with fellow substitute Habib Diarra to end the club's six-match winless home run against Fulham (D3 L3), and their first top-flight victory over the Cottagers since January 2009. 

Despite taking early control, Sunderland were fortunate not to concede midway through the first half as Josh King missed a golden chance, firing over the bar from a superb Alex Iwobi delivery. 

King went close again but was denied by some proactive defending from Reinildo, as a lack of composure in front of goal proved costly for Alvaro Arbeloa's side in the first half.

New arrival Gonzalo Garcia, who scored in both of his first two matches for Fulham after joining from Real Madrid in the summer, also saw an opportunity go begging after the break as Nordi Mukiele was on hand to deny the Spaniard's low strike. 

Fulham grew in confidence from there, creating a series of half-chances through Cesar Palacios and Oscar Bobb, but it was Isidor's introduction that sparked the difference. 

Within minutes of coming on, the striker was handed a golden opportunity to put Sunderland ahead as Enzo Le Fee teed him up, but his effort crashed against the foot of the post. 

It proved a warning of what was to come, though, as Isidor made no mistake in the 75th minute, tucking Diarra's low cross past Bernd Leno, who failed to cut out the ball after rushing off his line. 

Romaine Mundle should have added a second in the closing stages, but he failed to guide Granit Xhaka's throughball past Leno, though the miss ultimately did not prove costly. 

Black Cats break the jinx 

Sunderland arrived at the Stadium of Light in need of a win to kickstart their season, but Le Bris would have known it might not come easy. 

The Black Cats had lost their previous three matches against Fulham, in the Championship in 2017 and both home and away last season. 

But this time around proved a different matter, with Sunderland controlling much of the match despite seeing only 41.6% possession. 

In total, Le Bris' side generated 1.75 expected goals (xG) to Fulham's 1.02, and it was Isidor who was the vital spark – the substitute produced a match-high individual xG of 1.38 from his three shots (one on target, one goal).  

He netted what is his second game-winning goal in the Premier League, one year to the day since his only previous one – a 90th-minute winner that saw Sunderland beat Brentford 2-1, also at the Stadium of Light. 

Fulham, meanwhile, failed to attempt a shot on target from 11 total attempts, marking the most any team has had without having one on target in the Premier League since the Cottagers themselves against Brentford in April (11).
