Barcelona's perfect start to their LaLiga title defence continued at Estadio de Mestalla on Sunday as Fermin Lopez and Lamine Yamal starred in a 5-0 rout of Valencia.

Match Report

Fermin grabbed a goal and two assists for Barcelona, with Yamal, Raphinha and Pedri, who were named as Barcelona's captains 24 hours earlier, also on target. 

Anthony Gordon's fine start to life with Barcelona saw him register yet another assist, with the Blaugrana remaining the only side to win all four of their league games this term. 

Barcelona took just six minutes to open the scoring when Yamal was found by Fermin's fine pass behind the Valencia defence before lofting the ball over Stole Dimitrievski.

Yamal thought he had doubled his and the visitors' tally two minutes later when he crashed the ball in at the near post after being teed up by Fermin once again, but the goal was ruled out for an offside against the Barcelona number 10. 

However, Barcelona did get their second in the 22nd minute through Fermin, who picked out the bottom-left corner following Gordon's cutback to the edge of the box.

Barcelona's dominance continued, and only a brilliant save from Dimitrievski stopped Fermin from grabbing his brace, with the Spaniard's effort tipped onto the base of the post. 

Raphinha pulled Barcelona further clear five minutes after the restart, tucking home from close range after Yamal and Fermin combined to great effect down the right-hand side. 

The champions saw Rodri crash a header against the crossbar before Gordon's shot was saved by Dimitrievski, and they added further gloss to the scoreline with two late goals.

Pedri rifled into the bottom-left corner in the 79th minute before Yamal brought up his brace four minutes from time. After collecting Dani Olmo's pass, he ruthlessly finished past Dimitrievski after beating the offside trap.

Fermin haunts Valencia as Raphinha hits half-century

Many were unsure how Barcelona would replace the goals from last season after allowing Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres to leave the club, while also not taking up the option to make Marcus Rashford's loan permanent, but their attack was firing on all cylinders here. 

After scoring just 13 times in an injury-hit 2025-26 campaign, Raphinha already has six goals this season. The Brazilian is the second player, after Lionel Messi in 2012-13 and 2013-14, to score six goals in his team's first four matches in a LaLiga season in the 21st century. 

Raphinha's second-half strike also took him to 50 goals in LaLiga, and he has now netted eight goals in his last five appearances in the competition, but Fermin and Yamal also had their say in Barcelona's convincing win. 

Fermin has now been involved in 10 goals in four LaLiga games against Valencia (six goals, four assists), more than he has against any other opponent in the competition, while Yamal finished with team-high totals for shots (eight), touches in the opposition box (19), chances created (five) and touches (105).

And Flick's side were dominant from start to finish. They ended with an expected goals (xG) total of 4.05 from their 25 attempts, 10 of which were on target, while also restricting Valencia to just three attempts, which generated an xG value of 0.67.
