Matthias Jaissle has urged Newcastle United fans to be patient with new signing Aladji Bamba.

Bamba joined Newcastle from Monaco in July in a deal reportedly worth up to £34m, but he has so far made just one appearance.

He came off the bench in the Magpies' Premier League opener – a 2-2 draw with Liverpool – making a 14-minute cameo where he had just five touches of the ball.

The 20-year-old could be in line to feature in Newcastle's EFL Cup third-round clash with Millwall, though, as Jaissle looks to give more minutes to his squad.

But the German does not want to rush Bamba's introduction to English football and is instead looking to ease him into life at St. James' Park.

"AB is a young lad with huge potential, but also we need to be patient with him," Jaissle said.

"We need to give him the time for the adaptation. Everyone responds a little bit differently to the physicality and intensity of the game."

Jaissle has so far enjoyed an unbeaten start to life at Newcastle, winning two and drawing two of his games in all competitions.

Next up is a trip to The Den, with this set to be their first meeting with Millwall in any competition since April 1993 in the second tier when they won 2-1.

Newcastle have progressed from 10 of their last 12 EFL Cup third-round ties, including their last six in a row since a 0-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in 2015-16.

And though Jaissle did not know too much about Millwall when the draw was made, he is now bracing for a "crazy game".

"The atmosphere will be a bit special down there," he said. "I'm aware of that, but it doesn't influence my coaching.

"It should not influence the players. We need to have the focus on the pitch and what we can influence. If we are doing a good job, we can go a round further."
