Middlesbrough toppled Norwich City 4-3 thanks to Ashley Phillips' late goal at the Riverside.

Boro made it back-to-back Championship wins in dramatic fashion on Saturday, as they survived a Norwich surge.

Norwich took the lead in the first minute, with Mohamed Toure capitalising on a slack pass from Aidan Morris.

Yet Tommy Conway squared for Sebastian Berhalter to restore parity three minutes later, and Brighton loanee Amario Cozier-Duberry swiftly put the home side ahead.

Berhalter's second put Boro well on their way to what looked set to be a routine victory, but Norwich had other ideas.

Substitutes Jovon Makama and Jacob Wright dragged them level, but the Canaries' grand comeback was spoilt when defender Phillips steered home late on.

Elsewhere, Southampton romped to a 4-1 win over Bristol City, with Finn Azaz scoring and setting up two other goals.

Boro's home comforts

Middlesbrough have now won each of their last five home league games, which marks their longest run since March 2023, when they won seven on the bounce.

They are also unbeaten in nine league meetings with Norwich (W6 D3). In fact, Norwich have lost on four of their last five Championship visits to Middlesbrough (D1).

The manic nature of this encounter was evidenced in the stat sheet, with Boro having 17 shots to Norwich's 13.

Boro did create the better opportunities overall, registering five big chances to Norwich's three and winning the expected goals battle (2.07 xG to 1.62), and they sit within one point of leaders West Ham.

Southampton, on the other hand, only managed 10 shots in their big win, which is their lowest total in a Championship game this season.

Not that they will care, given how clinical they were, with their four goals coming from chances worth just 1.37 xG combined.
