Danny Welbeck has vowed to give everything on the pitch for Chelsea after his move to Stamford Bridge from Brighton was confirmed on Saturday. 

Welbeck has signed a two-year deal with Chelsea, becoming the first player over the age of 26 Chelsea have paid a fee for since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in 2022.  

The 35-year-old will now link up with Chelsea on their pre-season tour, with his arrival coming hours after the Blues lost 2-1 to rivals Tottenham in the Sydney Super Cup.

Welbeck arrives at Stamford Bridge fresh from leading Brighton to an eighth-place finish in the Premier League, securing a spot in the qualifying round for the Conference League.

He scored 13 goals in the Premier League for the Seagulls in 2025-26, equalling the record for the most by a Brighton player in the top flight (Glenn Murray in 2018-19). 

Welbeck's 14 goal involvements were also his joint-most in a top-flight campaign along with 2024-25, while only Ollie Watkins (16), Morgan Gibbs-White (15) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (14) netted more times in the Premier League than Welbeck last season among English players in the competition. 

"When you hear of interest from Chelsea, it's something that fills you with such immense pride," Welbeck told the club's website.

"Knowing the history of Chelsea, it's a club that wants to win trophies and is pushing to do that every single season. I'm really honoured to come to a club of this stature at what feels like a really exciting time.

"I know a few of the boys already, and I've had fantastic conversations with the manager and already feel that connection.

'I've got that fire in my belly, and I'm ready to give everything for this club to make everyone at Chelsea, and the supporters, proud."

The signing of Welbeck will also potentially see Chelsea field a player over the age of 30 for the first time since Thiago Silva's final game for the Blues over two years ago. 

It has also been reported that Jordan Henderson, who left Brentford last month, is another experienced player set to sign for Chelsea in the not too distant future. 

Welbeck joins Chelsea with great Premier League pedigree, having made 400 appearances in the competition. The Blues have not had a player with 400+ top-flight appearances play for them in the competition since John Terry's 492nd and final outing in May 2017. 

During his time at Brighton, Welbeck made 201 appearances across all competitions, scoring 51 goals and providing 13 assists. He also departs as the Seagulls' top scorer in Premier League history, having found the back of the net 46 times.

"It's always sad to see a player and a person of Danny's stature leave, and we are all sorry to see him go," Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler said of Welbeck's exit. 

"Danny has been a pleasure to work with from the moment I arrived at the club. His professionalism, attitude and commitment set the standard here every day, and he has been a fantastic support to me, personally.

"As well as the quality he brought on the pitch, he was an important leader within the squad and a role model for our younger players.

"We are grateful for everything he has done for the club and wish him all the very best for the future."

Welbeck could make his debut for his new team against Juventus in Chelsea's next pre-season friendly next Wednesday. The Blues also face AC Milan and Johor Darul Ta'zim before beginning their Premier League campaign away to London rivals Fulham on August 24.
