According to Bild, Schalke 04 currently sits at the bottom of the Bundesliga clubs' net assets list with negative net assets of €96.6 million, which could lead to serious consequences.

Sports director Frank Baumann bluntly stated: "Football has two necessary goals: you have to be financially stable and athletically successful. Many clubs are still far from both goals." In contrast, Elversberg, also promoted to the Bundesliga, has net assets of approximately €1.4 million, ranking second from the bottom.

Therefore, Schalke 04's management is acting very cautiously. Negative net assets, or uncovered debt, have already limited the club's large investments. If this promoted team incurs a loss at the end of the fiscal year on December 31, 2026, Schalke 04 will be deducted 3 points in the 2027/28 season. This is an extremely terrible situation, as every point can determine whether the team avoids relegation.

The fact is, now that the Royal Blues have been promoted to the Bundesliga, negative net assets cannot continue to worsen to meet the relevant requirements. If Schalke 04 remains in the top league after next season, the club must also increase its net assets by 10% in the next fiscal year. In plain terms, this means achieving a profit of approximately €10 million. At that point, competitors can increase investment, while Schalke 04 will have to sell key players.

Baumann said: "We cannot achieve such profits through daily operations. We need to generate surpluses every year through player transfers. If the net asset problem is not solved, the situation will not change in the next 10 years."

This summer, there is another challenge on the sports front. Baumann stated: "Our financial targets until December 31, 2026, have not yet been met. The transfer window will be open until September 1, so it is likely that another player will need to be sold to achieve the goals."

Schalke 04 does not lack players who can be sold. Moussa Sylla and Vitaliy Becker could both bring millions of euros in revenue to the Royal Blues. Another option is cooperative capital injection, which also allowed the club to bring in Edin Džeko and Adil Aouchiche, among others, during the winter window.
