On August 24th local time, during a Sky Sports program, Carragher criticized Liverpool player Wirtz.

Speaking about Wirtz's performance against Newcastle, Carragher said: "I don't think we're seeing a serious dip in form. The performances we've seen over the past year might reflect who he really is: a good footballer. Wirtz isn't a £110 million player; he's more of a £50 million to £60 million player. He's a good player with good technical ability, but I'm not sure what level people actually expect from him."

He continued: "How should Wirtz be deployed? Honestly, I don't see how he fits into this team. The idea that players need a year to adapt to the Premier League is just a misconception in my opinion. I thought this discussion would come up in six weeks, but it's already here. I don't see a place for him in the team. Wirtz plays as an attacking midfielder, but I'd rather see Szoboszlai in that position. We can't continue like this. This situation isn't working. Last season proved that. I think we're slowly reaching a point where Wirtz is no longer suitable for this team."
