The media stated that Messi scored four goals against Montreal, two of which were free kicks, moving him into joint second place with Jair Rosa-Pinto on the all-time free-kick scoring list, four goals behind Marcelinho Carioca.

The ranking is: Marcelinho Carioca with 78 goals, Messi with 74 goals, Jair Rosa-Pinto with 74 goals, Roberto Dinamite with 73 goals, and Juninho Pernambucano with 72 goals.
