There is a familiar look to the top of the Serie A table after just two matchweeks in 2026-27, with Roma, Inter, AC Milan, Juventus, Atalanta and Lazio all on maximum points.

And two of those sides, Luciano Spalletti's Juve and Ruben Amorim's Milan, will go head-to-head on Sunday in one of the weekend's standout fixtures.

Both teams missed out on Champions League qualification on the final day of last season, but after their 100% starts, hopes are high that these traditional powerhouses could be involved in the Scudetto race in 2026-27.

But which way will Sunday's clash go? After delving into the best Opta insights, we pick out the players and storylines to watch.

What's expected? 

The Opta supercomputer is siding with Juventus ahead of Sunday's headline fixture.

Across 10,000 pre-match simulations conducted by our data-led model, the Bianconeri were triumphant in 46.1%, with 27.2% going the way of Milan.

But given the recent history of this fixture, a draw would not be entirely surprising, and 26.7% of our pre-match simulations finished level.

Indeed, four of the last five Serie A matches between Juventus and Milan have ended goalless, including the last two.

These teams have not drawn more consecutive league games since 1973 (a run of four in a row), while they have never recorded more consecutive goalless encounters.

Indeed, Juve have kept a clean sheet in each of their last six Serie A matches against Milan – the last time the Bianconeri recorded more consecutive clean sheets against a single opponent in the competition was in 2016 (nine against Palermo).

As for Milan, this is the longest goalless run they have endured against a single opponent in their Serie A history.

However, the Rossoneri have remained unbeaten in five of their last six Serie A away games against Juventus (W2 D3) – keeping four clean sheets in the process (0.5 goals conceded per game on average).

This sequence comes after a previous run of nine consecutive away defeats against the Bianconeri, in which they averaged two goals conceded per game.

Spalletti's men to keep trying their luck

Juventus have defeated Frosinone 1-0 and Parma 2-0 to kickstart their first full season under Spalletti, and, alongside Roma and Lazio, they are one of just three teams to start the campaign with back-to-back clean sheets. 

They could now keep three clean sheets to open a Serie A campaign for just the second time in the last 10 years, after starting with six shutouts in 2024-25.

The Turin giants could also win their first three Serie A matches for the second consecutive season, after doing so in 2025-26 under Igor Tudor.

It would be the second time in their history that they have achieved that feat in back-to-back seasons under different head coaches, after 1985-86 and 1986-87 with Giovanni Trapattoni and Rino Marchesi.

Nico Gonzalez and Teun Koopmeiners were on the scoresheet against Parma last time out, as the Bianconeri's midfielders showed their forwards how to finish.

Gonzalez's goal, a deflected effort from distance, came when another long-range attempt of his rattled the post and deflected back to his feet, and he will likely shoot on sight again on Sunday.

The Argentine could score in back-to-back league games for the first time since June 2024, when he was still with Fiorentina, and he boasts a good record in home Serie A fixtures against Milan, providing one goal and two assists in four such matches.

Led by Gonzalez and company, no side attempted more shots from outside the box than Juventus across the first two matchdays of this Serie A season (18, level with Sassuolo).

On the other hand, only Torino (three) have registered fewer than Milan (five, level with Monza), as they look to build attacks patiently in Amorim's 3-4-3 system.

Amorim and Rabiot chasing rare feats for Milan

Amorim's Manchester United reign never truly got going, but he has started life in Serie A perfectly.

Having overseen victories over Torino (2-1) and Venezia (2-0), Amorim could become only the fourth coach to win his first three Serie A games in charge of Milan.

The previous trio to do so were Mario Sperone in 1952, Giuseppe Viani in 1956 and Luigi Bonizzoni in 1958.

With veteran Luka Modric and United States international Yunus Musah starting as Amorim's midfield duo last time out, former Juventus man Adrien Rabiot has been freed up to play a more advanced role.

He scored and provided an assist from the bench in Milan's opening game of the season, which also came in Turin against Torino.

And he could do something no non-Italian player has ever done before on his return to the city on Sunday; score for both teams in the iconic Serie A fixture between Juve and Milan, having previously represented the Bianconeri between 2019 and 2024.

Even when including Italian players, only Manuel Locatelli and Leonardo Bonucci have achieved that feat in the last 10 years.

Milan sanctioned the sale of Portugal attacker Rafael Leao prior to the closure of the transfer window, with Omari Hutchinson arriving on loan as his replacement, and Rabiot is one of several players who will be expected to step up in his absence. 

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Juventus – Randal Kolo Muani 

Kolo Muani is yet to score this season despite amassing 1.33 xG, the fifth-highest figure of any player throughout Serie A's opening two matchdays.

The Frenchman's wastefulness led to public criticism from Spalletti last week, and he will be desperate to kickstart his second stint with the Turin giants on Sunday.

That will be particularly important after Juve completed a loan deal for Newcastle's Nick Woltemade, with the towering German set to compete with Kolo Muani for gametime.

AC Milan – Goncalo Ramos 

Ramos scored his first Serie A goal last time out, with the Portugal international beginning to repay his club-record €74m transfer fee after arriving from Paris Saint-Germain.

And Ramos cannot complain about a lack of service thus far, as he had the joint-most shots of any player across Serie A's first two matchdays (13, alongside Armand Lauriente). 

His 1.46 expected goals (xG), meanwhile, is a figure only bettered by three players – Roma's Donyell Malen (2.78), Inter's Francesco Pio Esposito (1.56) and Sassuolo's Kieron Bowie (1.48).
