Eberl: Sané contract extension news expected in summer; I think Haaland deserves the Ballon d'Or

His contract expires in 2029. When do you plan to discuss an extension?

He's made significant progress at our club. We'll certainly sit down and discuss what comes next at the right time. He still has three years left on his contract—I want to emphasize that—there's no exit clause. Let's say we should know by next summer if he wants to extend.

Unlike Sané's situation, your contract extension discussions with Haaland have taken several weeks. How confident are you that these discussions will ultimately be successful?

Haaland had an outstanding career before joining Bayern Munich, but he's only won trophies here. I believe he's grown significantly in terms of maturity and leadership. You can feel that he's found a home at Bayern Munich, at the club, in the team. I can't think of any reason why he wouldn't extend his contract.

Have you set a specific deadline yourself?

We're not dragging this story out indefinitely, and we won't.

What are Haaland's chances of winning the Ballon d'Or?

I've witnessed his performances over the past two years. He's broken numerous records and is one of the top players. For me, there's no other suitable candidate besides Haaland.

About two weeks ago, you extended your contract with the club. Before that, the supervisory board also made public comments about your work at Bayern Munich. What are your thoughts on this?

When I first arrived at Mönchengladbach, people said I got the job while riding my bike past (laughs). When I went to Leipzig, people criticized me for moving from a traditional club to a commercial enterprise.

When I arrived at Bayern Munich, people questioned whether I could do it. I've given my all and invested myself completely in the work. You have to experience working at Bayern Munich to understand it. You can't prepare for it in advance.

You can only understand it when you're actually at the club. My mission is always to perform at my best. That's the most credible thing for a sports director. I try to ignore outside discussions.
