Chelsea's 2026-27 Women's Super League began in underwhelming fashion, as they could only draw 1-1 with Aston Villa.

The Blues are the Opta supercomputer's favourites to win the WSL this season, but they now face a tough second fixture as they head to Manchester United.

That clash at Progress with Unity Stadium on Sunday is the headline fixture of WSL MD2.

Arsenal host newly promoted Crystal Palace, while champions Manchester City travel to Villa. 

Here, we run through the Opta supercomputer's WSL predictions.

WEST HAM V LONDON CITY LIONESSES

Alexia Putellas began her time at London City Lionesses by helping her new team to a 2-1 win over Man Utd on her WSL bow.

Now, these WSL disruptors head to West Ham, whose season started with a 3-1 loss to Tottenham.

London City have a 41.4% win probability, with West Ham's chances ranked at 33%.

West Ham have won just one of their last four meetings with London City in all competitions (D2 L1), a 4-1 victory in the League Cup group stage in November 2024.

Since the start of last season, West Ham have lost eight of their nine London derbies in the WSL, with the exception being a 1-1 draw in this exact fixture against London City in March this year.

MANCHESTER UNITED V CHELSEA

So, two big teams looking for their first wins of the season meet on Sunday, with the supercomputer backing Chelsea to take the three points.

The Blues have a 48.1% win probability, with United's chances coming in at 27.8%, while there is a 24.1% likelihood of a draw.

Chelsea have won 17 of their 20 meetings with United across all competitions (D2 L1), though they did draw this fixture last season 1-1.

The Blues are the only team that United have never beaten in the WSL, failing in all 13 attempts (D2 L11); only four teams have faced an opponent more times in the competition without ever winning.

Since the start of the 2023-24 campaign, United have won just one of their 18 league matches against fellow 'big four' teams (D6 L11) – in that same period, Chelsea have won 36 points in such games (W11 D3 L4) compared to the Red Devils' nine.

United are currently on their longest winless run in the league since reforming in 2018 (P5 D2 L3) but they have not failed to win either of their opening two matches of a league campaign since their debut in the WSL in 2019-20.

BIRMINGHAM CITY V BRIGHTON

Birmingham City's first game back in the big time ended in defeat to Man City last time out, while Brighton lost to Arsenal.

The newly promoted hosts are the ones backed here by the supercomputer (40.1%), while the Seagulls are given a 33.3% chance of victory. The 26.6% threat of a draw is the joint-highest across this weekend's games.

Birmingham have won just one of their last 26 WSL home matches (D6 L19), 2-0 v Arsenal in January 2022.

Brighton, meanwhile, have won each of their last three meetings with Birmingham across all competitions, all away from home and all without conceding.

EVERTON V CHARLTON ATHLETIC

Everton lost to Crystal Palace last week, although there has been some controversy surrounding that match.

The Toffees will now look to get back on track against another promoted team, as they host Charlton Athletic.

Everton suffered eight home defeats in the league last season following their move to Goodison Park, their most ever in a WSL campaign; the Toffees did win three of their final five (L2), after starting the season with six straight home losses.

Charlton won only one of their final seven away games in the WSL2 last season (D4 L2), while each of the last 10 top-flight-debuting teams have lost their first WSL away game, since Sunderland beat Liverpool 2-1 in 2015.

Everton have a 53.2% win probability, while there is a 22.9% chance of Charlton winning at Goodison Park.

LIVERPOOL V TOTTENHAM

The other game with a 26.6% draw probability on MD2 is Liverpool v Tottenham.

Liverpool are the favourites (40.3%), with Spurs holding a 33.1% likelihood of victory.

The Reds are unbeaten at home against Spurs in the WSL (W2 D2), winning 2-0 in this fixture last season to earn their first victory of the campaign on MD13.

However, Liverpool have lost their last three home games in all competitions, having won four in a row beforehand. The Reds have not lost four in a row at home as a WSL side since January 2019.

Spurs are looking to start their WSL campaign with two wins in a row for a third time, doing so in 2021-22 and 2025-26 previously, going on to finish fifth in both seasons.

ARSENAL V CRYSTAL PALACE

While Palace wait for the results of an investigation into their season-opening win over Everton, they must prepare for a trip to Arsenal.

The Gunners are unbeaten in each of their last 19 home games in the WSL (W16 D3), already a club record; overall, they are 18 games unbeaten (W14 D4) and only once have they had a longer run, going 19 undefeated between August 2011 and October 2012.

Palace have lost all eight of their London derbies in the WSL, conceding 39 goals in total at an average of 4.9 per game; no other London side averages more than 2.6 goals against per derby match.

Arsenal have won each of their last four meetings with Palace in all competitions by an aggregate score of 20-0, winning 5-0 at home and 4-0 away in their only previous WSL campaign together in 2024-25.

And Arsenal are the biggest favourites of MD2, with an 80.7% win probability. Palace have just a 7.4% chance of victory, according to Opta's model.

ASTON VILLA V MANCHESTER CITY

The most likely away victors this weekend are Man City, at 69.9%, as they head to Villa, who are fresh from frustrating Chelsea last time out.

Villa have a 13.4% win probability, while the likelihood of a draw is 16.7%.

And City star Khadija Shaw started the season in superb fashion.

As well as scoring twice, Shaw had 11 shots from inside the box in Man City's 3-1 win over Birmingham on MD1.

It was just the third time in WSL history a player had managed that, with Shaw one of the other two instances (12 vs Everton in January 2026); the other was Crystal Dunn for Chelsea v Yeovil Town in April 2017 (11).

Man City have won nine of their 12 WSL games against Villa (D2 L1), going unbeaten in seven (W5 D2) since a 4-3 defeat in their first away match of the 2022-23 campaign.

Villa have earned four points from their last four WSL home matches against Man City (W1 D1 L2), drawing 0-0 in this fixture last season – that is just one of only two occasions in which the Citizens have been shut out in the league since December 2024.
