Mason Greenwood and former Arsenal star Matteo Guendouzi are the subject of a disciplinary investigation by UEFA, their club Fenerbahce have confirmed.

The pair were involved in the ugly scenes that followed the Turkish side's feisty Champions League qualifier against Lyon last month.

Fenerbahce progressed to the League Phase after winning the second leg 2-1, which gave them a 3-2 aggregate triumph.

However, at full-time, Guendouzi, who previously played for Lyon's arch-rivals Marseille, was at the centre of heated scenes as he sparked a wild brawl and appeared to be attacked by a member of the French side's coaching staff.

Greenwood was also involved in the trouble and grabbed his crotch before he pulled a face in the direction of the home fans.

Guendouzi similarly grabbed his crotch and could be heard to shout 'Allez l'OM', which means 'Go Marseille'.

The pair later posed together in the dressing room and made gestures with their fingers.

And on Thursday, a statement from Fenerbahce confirmed that Greenwood - who also played for Marseille - and Guendouzi, were being investigated due to their behaviour.

It read: 'Following the UEFA Champions League Play-Off Round second-leg match, a disciplinary process has been initiated by UEFA concerning our players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood, as well as our club.

'Our club will present the necessary defences before the relevant UEFA committees to protect the rights and interests of both our players and Fenerbahce.

'All required information, documents, and defences will be submitted to UEFA, and developments are being closely monitored by our club. We present this to the public for information.'

At the centre of the post-match chaos was Guendouzi, who was seen goading Lyon supporters as he left the field.

However, the 27-year-old's antics were met with a furious response from a man dressed in a Lyon tracksuit, later identified by French newspaper L'Equipe as the club's goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira.

Chaotic footage taken from the stands shows Ferreira emerging from the tunnel and seemingly aiming a flying kick at Guendouzi as he walked off.

Players and staff from both sides then rushed towards the chaos before a violent melee broke out, with punches thrown in the direction of Ferreira as he was pinned against a wall. Security staff could also be seen holding back players and coaches.

Guendouzi had been at the centre of the controversy throughout the game too, with the former Gunners star seen giving home fans the finger before kick-off and during the match in response to a chorus of boos and jeers aimed in his direction.

Tempers later flared on the pitch, with reports claiming Guendouzi shouted 'we're f****ng you' towards his opponents when his team went 2-0 up.

Lyon's players then reacted angrily at full-time and shoved the Frenchman before his Fenerbahce team-mates, including Ederson and Romelu Lukaku, rushed to his defence.

Lyon's Corentin Tolisso subsequently hit out at Guendouzi after the fiery encounter.

'You have to stay humble in victory, go celebrate that with your team in the locker room,' he said. 'Well done, congratulations to them, but there's no real need to do that.'

Guendouzi later defended his actions, insisting Lyon fans had insulted his family throughout the evening, while Fenerbahce boss Ismail Kartal offered his support to the midfielder.

Fenerbahce open their European campaign at home to Roma next Thursday, although it remains to be seen whether the disciplinary proceedings will conclude before then.
