On September 13, Borussia Mönchengladbach officially announced that the team had parted ways with head coach Marco Polanski, making him the first Bundesliga coach to be sacked this season.

Additionally, Polanski is the second coach to be sacked in the top five leagues this season. The first coach to be sacked in the top five leagues was former Fiorentina coach Raffaele Palladino.
Since the start of the season, Mönchengladbach's performance has been poor. The team lost all three of their opening Bundesliga matches: 0-3 to Leipzig, 3-4 to promoted side Elversberg, and most recently 0-5 away to Freiburg. In three matches, Mönchengladbach has scored only 3 goals but conceded 12, currently sitting at the bottom of the Bundesliga.
The 0-5 defeat to Freiburg became the "final straw" that led to Polanski's dismissal.
Polanski took over Mönchengladbach in March 2023, having previously worked at the club and once led the team to strong results. However, since the start of the new season, the team quickly lost its balance both offensively and defensively, and a series of defeats led the club's management to lose patience.
With Polanski's departure, two head coaches have now left their posts in the top five leagues this season. Mönchengladbach will be temporarily managed by assistant coach Gerhard Licht, and the club hopes the team can turn its fortunes around soon.
