Robin Gosens has not played for the national team for over a year. The left-back last played for Germany in June 2023, in the Nations League semi-final 1-2 loss to Portugal. One of the reasons is the intense competition for his position. However, the Emmerich-born player still dreams of returning to the national team.

On Thursday, new Germany coach Klopp will announce the national squad for the upcoming matches against the Netherlands (September 24), Greece (September 27/October 4), and Serbia (October 1). Schalke 04 hopes to have another German international in their squad soon. Potential candidates include Gosens and Karius, and there have been recent rumors about Sofian Faouzi.

It is certain that despite Karius's excellent performance (as reported by Bild), he appears to have only a marginal chance. Klopp is likely to name Ter Stegen as the No. 1. Ulbricht and Alexander Nübel are also strong contenders for selection.

Gosens also appears unlikely to be called up. The left-back said: "I haven't had personal contact with Klopp yet. I just try to earn my chance with my performance. The game against Union Berlin was quite good." In the capital, Gosens played an important role and scored the opening goal to make it 1-0. He continued: "I know my role: I'm not a guaranteed starter, but the one waiting for an opportunity from behind. I know that compared to Nico Schlotterbeck, Raum, and Mittelstädt, I have three very strong competitors on the wing who are all in good form right now."

Until the 2028 European Championship, Gosens and Karius have plenty of time to prove their current form and earn a chance from the national team coach. As long as the door is not completely closed, both will continue to pursue their dreams. Gosens said: "My goal is to continue helping Schalke 04. If I do that, maybe I'll get back into the national team's consideration. As long as no one tells me: 'Stop dreaming, it's pointless,' I will continue to believe."
