Christian Pulisic capped off a hat-trick with a 'beautiful' nutmeg goal as the United States thrashed Panama 5-1 on Sunday to all but secure their place at the 2022 World Cup.

While still not officially assured of a spot in Qatar, only an implausible six-goal midweek defeat to Costa Rica would prevent Gregg Berhalter's side from returning to the tournament after missing out four years ago.

The Chelsea star was at the fore-front of his nation's performance as he notched two of his three goals from the penalty spot before completing his hat-trick with a stunning finish, nutmegging Panama defender Andres Andrade before converting from close range.

Paul Arriola and Jesus Ferreira also both got on the scoresheet for USA in their emphatic victory at the Exploria Stadium.

Pulisic's 65th minute goal was the talk of the match, after Luca de la Torre and Antonee Robinson twice exchanged passes, Robinson crossed.

With his back to the goal, a spinning Pulisic took a touch with his left leg, spun around Fidel Escobar and dummied the ball through his own legs.

The 23-year-old poked the ball with the outside of his right foot through the legs of Andres Andrade and slotted over the a leg of sliding goalkeeper of Luis Mejia with his right foot from 8 yards.

His goal sent USA fans wild as they heaped praise on the captain's 'incredible' goal that rounded off a superb performance.

One fan said: 'Pulisic megged himself, megged a defender and scored. Even Messi doesn’t nutmeg himself. Who else nutmegs their own two legs. Please. America is winning everything forever.

USA will now look to secure their place at the 2022 Qatar World Cup when they face Costa Rica on Wednesday evening.
