Former German international Podolski gave an interview to "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger" to discuss the German national team's World Cup journey.

What do you think are Germany's chances of winning the World Cup?
The German team's goal is always to be world champions - no matter the circumstances. We have the ability and the necessary prerequisites. Whether we are the top favorites is not crucial. You don't necessarily have to be the favorite to win the championship.
What are the German team's strengths, and where do you see weaknesses?
I am too far removed from the front lines now to comment on the details. But the talent in the squad is there - individual skills from star players, and Champions League-level players. The question is always whether they can perform as a unit on the field.
Will Neuer return to the German national team at the age of 40? Are you surprised?
A little, because he had actually faded out (of the German team) before. But Manuel has obviously found new energy, as if he's five years younger, and has been performing exceptionally well at Bayern Munich. Purely from a competitive perspective, he can definitely help the team - although this is a bit cruel for those goalkeepers who have been eagerly waiting for their chance. But life always brings you surprises.
Is he still one of the best goalkeepers in the world at 40?
One of the best, without a doubt. For goalkeepers, age is secondary. His mere presence in the locker room and training camp - that experience, composure, and aura - its value cannot be measured by paper statistics.
Germany will play against Curaçao on Sunday. What's your prediction?
Must win, any way possible. I predict 3-0.
From your own experience, how important is the opening match?
Extremely important - I've experienced it myself many times. Especially for young players who are playing in the World Cup for the first time - they will be nervous, under immense pressure, and carrying expectations from themselves, fans, and the entire country. A victory can instantly release this pressure. You realize: I can do this, we can do this. This injects energy and confidence into the entire tournament.
Conversely, if you lose the first match, that shadow will constantly haunt you - in your mind and in your legs. Therefore, it's not just about winning, but also about putting on a convincing performance. The first match sets the tone for all subsequent matches.
