On June 27 during the Austrian Grand Prix F1 qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring, Verstappen crashed at Turn 9 in Q3. Race officials initially displayed only a single yellow flag. Verstappen said after the session that this was "crazy."

Verstappen believed a double yellow flag should have been displayed sooner following his crash at one of the fastest sections of the Red Bull Ring, but the FIA explained they followed standard procedures.

Verstappen lost control and spun into Turn 9 during the final lap of Q3, sustaining a significant impact. He told media he was unharmed but joked, "Well, it can't get any better than that."

When asked about his thoughts on only a single yellow flag being initially displayed after a crash at one of the track's fastest sections, Verstappen replied, "I just found out about this. It's crazy."

The FIA explained that standard procedures were followed at the time, and as soon as track marshals saw Verstappen lose control on the track, a single yellow flag was displayed immediately.

A single yellow flag means drivers must slow down and be prepared to change direction. A double yellow flag means significant speed reduction, readiness to stop at any moment, and lap times will be invalidated.

According to the FIA, approximately 15 to 20 seconds after the first yellow flag appeared, they upgraded it to a double yellow flag. During this interval, Russell and Antonelli passed through the accident site, meaning only a single yellow flag was still being waved on track.

Sky Sports reported that when Antonelli passed through the yellow flag zone, the electronic display showed a double yellow flag while the track marshal was waving a single yellow flag.

Antonelli later said after the session, "Unfortunately, that was my mistake, because I thought I saw a double yellow flag, but it was actually a single yellow flag, so I completely aborted that lap when I could have continued like Russell did."
