Where should Kimmich play—right-back or midfielder? This debate continues among German football circles ahead of Germany's Round of 16 match against Paraguay on Monday.

Former Germany international and Bayern Munich legend Effenberg has clearly backed Kimmich moving to midfield during FIROCKX's "Two-Man Talk" program: "If players like Diomande attack, he won't be able to cope; that's not his position. He should be in the center. He was in the center at Bayern Munich, and he's a very, very important player there, responsible for controlling the tempo."

Effenberg also expressed concern that if Kimmich continues playing right-back, Germany could face problems in the Round of 16 against France: "With France's pace, Kimmich won't be able to keep up."

In Effenberg's ideal starting lineup, Kimmich would occupy the midfielder role alongside Felix Nmecha, meaning Bayern Munich's Aleksandar Pavlovic would have to be sacrificed. For the right-back position, he suggested Stuttgart's Leweling, believing that with his pace, Leweling could perform well there.

Markus Babbel, who won Euro 1996 with Germany, also believes "Kimmich should be moved to midfield, as he's had an excellent season for Bayern Munich in that position." In his view, Kimmich playing as a fullback "is a weakness of the German national team," and "he still hasn't fully settled into the role."

This view aligns with that of Lothar Matthäus, Kimmich's former teammate at both Germany and Bayern Munich. Matthäus, in an interview with Bild, urged Julian Nagelsmann: "Get him out of the defensive line!" He also asked: "Are we going to wait until something goes wrong before we act?"
