On June 28, Austrian striker Kalajdzic gave an interview to FIFA after helping his team secure a crucial equalizer in stoppage time to advance.

The Austrian forward had pulled his team back from the brink of elimination in the final moments, achieving the pinnacle of his career with a remarkable personal story of perseverance and redemption.
In the Group J match at Children's Mercy Park, Austria faced Algeria. In the 95th minute, Kalajdzic scored a vital goal, securing an equalizer in stoppage time and keeping Austria alive in the tournament.
After the match, Kalajdzic was silent for a moment during the interview, taking deep breaths before answering questions, then pausing again.
He was still overwhelmed by everything that had just happened.
"Honestly, I... I don't even know what to say, it's incredible," Kalajdzic said. "It's truly an unbelievable moment."
He had just become a national hero for his country. His story quickly spread across social media, with Austrian fans celebrating their new hero. The towering striker had saved Austria's World Cup campaign in the most dramatic fashion possible.
As the match entered stoppage time, Riyad Mahrez scored to make it 3-2 for Algeria, nearly sending Austria to elimination. However, Kalajdzic equalized in the final minutes, putting his team into the knockout stage and securing a Round of 32 matchup against Spain.
In the days to come, his jersey would become a symbol of this "unforgettable night," and Kalajdzic would continue to treasure the legendary moment he had achieved in Kansas City.
But Kalajdzic's story is anything but ordinary. He had endured many setbacks along his journey, and even head coach Rangnick could not have predicted such a scenario.
"If Kalajdzic had said six months ago that he would be called up to the national team and score such crucial goals in recent weeks, no one would have believed it."
Before this historic match, Kalajdzic had suffered a serious injury.
Shortly after joining Stuttgart in 2019, he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, along with damage to his medial collateral ligament and meniscus.
After recovering, he regained form in the Bundesliga and joined Premier League club Wolves in August 2022. However, he suffered an injury in his Premier League debut and was substituted in the first half.
Since then, he had accumulated 767 days sidelined by injury, with virtually no opportunity for consistent playing time in England.
In 2024, he returned to Germany to join Eintracht Frankfurt, but after just five appearances, he suffered another serious injury – tears to his anterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament in his right knee.
"During that time, I just wanted to escape everything," Kalajdzic recalled.
Entering the 2024-25 season, he returned to Austria to join LASK Linz, finally regaining consistent playing time and contributing 7 goals and 11 assists.
Rangnick said: "This shows that if you keep pushing forward, set goals each day and try to achieve them, there will be results. I'm very happy for him."
Regarding the match result, Rangnick said: "We were very shocked after conceding, but that's football. Sometimes there are special moments in life and in matches that will be remembered forever."
At that moment, Austria was nearly eliminated, and Kalajdzic had been sitting on the bench watching his team on the brink of elimination, until Rangnick decided to bring him on for one last chance.
Kalajdzic said after the match: "After they scored, I thought, 'Okay, let me prove myself, I'm ready.' Thank God we seized the opportunity and scored. I think all of Austria breathed a sigh of relief. Now I'm both excited and a bit overwhelmed, truly at a loss for words."
He came on as a substitute for Mwene in the 95th minute and scored the crucial goal a minute later.
"I'm very happy to contribute to the team," he said. "We're on a journey, an adventure, like a fairy tale, and we want to continue writing it. This draw proved our spirit – we're always ready for any situation, and no matter what happens, we'll give everything, fight for our country and make our people proud. Today we did that."
