Following the official announcement of his transfer to Tottenham, Matheus Fernandes gave his first interview as a Tottenham player to the club's official media.

On joining Tottenham and De Zerbi:

I'm very happy. I'm very excited about this next step. Of course, this is a fantastic club. I already knew the city and country. I spoke with the manager. I think he was the key factor in me joining Tottenham and becoming part of this project.

We will fight for the Premier League, we will fight for the top position. The way he spoke to me and my family was very special. So yes, I'm very eager to meet him, meet the fans, meet everyone and give my best while enjoying this moment. I think we need someone like him, not just as a manager but as someone who can push you to your limits. That will be very special for me.

I have complete confidence in him and this club. The way he spoke about me and to me and my family is what made my decision. You want to build a strong team, not just to play a few matches, but to compete at home and away, to face opponents with passion, energy and fighting spirit.

That's how I play. I play to win, to beat other teams, to beat other players. So we're on the same wavelength, and now my job is to give my best to help the team, help the manager, help the club.

For me, when I play in the number 8 position as a box-to-box midfielder, I feel more comfortable. When I was at Southampton, I played higher up as a winger, but at Sporting CP, I always played deeper. So I can play as a winger, as a forward, and as a midfielder. I just want to help the team and my teammates, while also improving my own game. I know I need to score more goals, create more and work harder because I want to win titles. At Sporting CP, I always learned these things: ball control, trying to control the match, trying to play with intelligence, because football isn't just about who runs more or tries harder, but about who knows when to pass, when to attack and when to defend.

So everything I have today comes from my past and what I've learned. Therefore, I'm ready for this next step, and I'm ready for the pressure. This is what I want, so I'm very happy to play for a big club, for a manager who wants to win titles, and that's the main reason.

On adapting:

Now I'm better prepared to play at this level because when I joined Southampton, my English was very poor. I only spoke Portuguese and Spanish, and no one there spoke those languages. Only English, so that helped me a lot. Before, I lived alone, but now I have my girlfriend and family here with me. I'm stronger now, so I'm ready for these next steps. The focus is on trying to improve. Now I've joined a club with different pressure, perhaps a different mindset. But in terms of my self-belief and what I can do, I believe in myself. I know I can improve the team, improve the club, and I'm here to help the team, help the manager and grow with him.

My family has always played an important role in my decisions, as has my girlfriend, my agent and everyone around me. I spoke with them, and I also spoke with Porro. I played with him at Sporting CP, and he told me everything. We discussed the manager, the mentality, the team changes, the training ground and the stadium. Of course, London is a city I already knew, but he also told me about it. He said many good things about this club, so I was ready. I told him I was ready to fight for titles, and this is our path.

Now I will give my absolute best. I know things can change very quickly. Right now, I'm in good form. But if I play one or two matches poorly, people might start putting pressure on me. That's football, that's how it works. So I'm very confident in myself. I know my qualities, what I can do for the team, and how I can improve the team. I try to focus on one match at a time, and when I'm on the pitch for that match, I think about the next one. I don't try to look too far into the future; I try to win in the present. I think that's what matters most.
