McGinn's goal gave Aston Villa the lead in their first away match of the Champions League group stage against Club Brugge.

The 2026/27 Champions League officially kicked off today, with AEK Athens vs. LASK and Club Brugge vs. Aston Villa being the first two matches. Just 13 minutes into the game, McGinn scored the opening goal of the match, which was also the first goal of this season's Champions League

Notably, Aston Villa were the Europa League champions last season, and as captain, McGinn was the player who lifted the trophy for the team.
