Neil Farrugia has turned down the chance of a big-money move to the Sky Bet Championship in order to finish his Biomedical Science degree.

The talented Ireland Under 21 international has decided that education must come first before he embarks on his career as a full-time professional footballer.

With university playing a big factor in his decision, Farrugia has instead agreed to join south Dublin side Shamrock Rovers for the time being which will allow him to stay local and finish his studies.

The University of Dublin midfielder is expected to sign an 18-month deal at Rovers which will see him through to when he graduates next summer.

Farrugia reportedly sees next summer as an ideal time to make his move following his graduation but there appears to be no clause in his deal with Rovers to allow him a quick exit after 12 months.

Bohemians also tried to sign Farrugia with the understanding that they would not stand in his way should the right offer come in for him once he had finished his studies.

Another factor in his move to the Hoops was the allure of playing Europa League football next season.

Rovers, who are currently second in the League of Ireland Premier Division, will play Norwegian side SK Brann in the first round but Farrugia may struggle to feature in the encounter as he is currently out with a hamstring injury.

The academically-gifted 20-year-old has already turned down a move to QPR last year while Middlesbrough showed a keen interest in bringing him to England.

Preston and Leeds were also reportedly scouting the youngster.

Farrugia trained with the Manchester City Under 23s side while on trial with the Premier League champions.
