Cardoso, Thesmann, Kevin Paredes, and Sands are all ruled out through injury; Musah and Maloney aren’t even under consideration. Four years of midfield depth painstakingly built by the U.S. team have vanished overnight. Yet, under these circumstances, Pochettino has selected only four midfielders—including two MLS-based players he clearly favors. Aidan Morris of Middlesbrough—a top-tier Championship defensive midfielder this season (44 appearances, 3rd-highest pass accuracy, 5th-most tackles, and 1st in successful ground duels)—failed to make the cut, while Seattle’s Roldán did. Beyond questionable selections, Pochettino brought ten wingers yet refused to allocate even one additional spot to a dedicated central or defensive midfielder. So if Adams or McKennie miss matches due to suspension, injury, or rotation, who will anchor the midfield? We can already foresee the team being easily overrun.
