According to well-known journalist Romano, former Manchester United assistant coach Van der Gaag will once again coach newly promoted Primeira Liga side Marítimo.

Romano stated that Marítimo reached an agreement to appoint former Manchester United assistant coach Van der Gaag as the team's new head coach. Both parties signed a contract until June 2028.

Van der Gaag is 54 years old and from the Netherlands. He served as an assistant coach for Manchester United in the 22/23 season and left after the 23/24 season. In May 2025, Van der Gaag coached FC Zürich, and was dismissed in October of the same year.

Van der Gaag previously coached Marítimo in September 2009 and left in September 2010.
