According to The Athletic, Ceballos has not yet signed with Real Betis because the signing fee has not been agreed upon.

Ceballos previously hinted in an interview that salary issues would not be an obstacle to his return to Real Betis, and it has been reported that he accepts his salary would be in the second tier of top earners—below Isco and Antoni.

The main disagreement between Ceballos and Real Betis is currently over the signing fee. Ceballos already gave up some income when he terminated his contract with Real Madrid this summer, so he hopes to receive a signing fee to compensate for his losses, but Real Betis and Ceballos have not been able to reach an agreement on this.

While the two sides were at an impasse, Ajax contacted Ceballos in the hope of recruiting him. However, the offer from Ajax and their coach Michel failed to impress Ceballos, and he never responded.

In this situation, Ajax chose not to waste any more time on Ceballos and instead turned their attention to Michel's former player Ounahi. After Girona was relegated, Ounahi is very likely to leave the team this summer.
