Mikel Arteta says Arsenal are planning to be "really active" and "ambitious" in the transfer market.

The reigning Premier League champions have already made two additions to their squad, with Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier both joining Arteta's squad.

Arsenal have also activated their option to sign Piero Hincapie on a permanent deal from Bayer Leverkusen after he impressed during a season-long loan last term.

However, Arsenal have also seen the likes of Leandro Trossard and Jakub Kiwior leave this summer, with Christian Norgaard also reportedly on his way to Everton. Myles Lewis-Skelly is reportedly of interest to Manchester United, too.

Arteta is aiming to strengthen further, with Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes expected to sign in a deal worth up to £80m, while the Gunners have also been linked with Julian Alvarez and Vinicius Junior.

While Arteta did not focus on specific transfers, he is confident Arsenal will continue to make a splash in the market.

"Well, we are really active, trying to improve and evolve the team. That's clear," he said.

"We expect to have movements in the next few weeks, obviously, because we want to get better like anybody else. And you can just see the transfer market and our opponents.

"What we are doing, we won't sit still, and we are very ambitious in what we want to do."

Arsenal won their first Premier League title since 2003-04 last term, finishing seven points clear of Manchester City in second place.

They won 26 of their matches in the top-flight, finishing the campaign on a five-match winning streak as they ended their drought, and also reached the Champions League final.

And Arsenal will be aiming to do even better this season as they seek more silverware, with Arteta noting more signings will be key.

"Because the margins are very small. Because we want to get better, and the level is going to increase," he said when asked why it is important to sign players.

"We need to increase the competition internally. We need to make sure we identify the things that we don't have in the team. We have bigger margins, and that's the way we have to see it."

Arsenal begin their Premier League title defence at home against newly promoted Coventry City on August 21.
