Zirkzee joined Manchester United from Bologna two years ago for £36.5 million, but he has only scored 9 goals in 75 appearances.

After Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko joined last summer, Zirkzee's position further declined. Under Carrick, he also had few chances to play in the second half of the season.

Lack of playing time kept the 25-year-old striker out of the Netherlands' World Cup squad, and he is now linked with leaving Manchester United to seek regular playing time.

Former Manchester United assistant coach Rene Meulensteen urged the striker to seize the opportunity and insisted that Zirkzee has not yet proven himself "worthy" of staying at Manchester United before the new season.

"I hear rumors he might go to Juventus, and I think that would be a good option for him," Meulensteen told talkSPORT.

"Obviously, he's not a regular starter; he's more of a rotational player."

"I don't think he has proven himself good enough to claim a starting spot next season, especially with Sesko doing well under Michael."

Juventus are currently the frontrunners, wanting to sign the Dutch international on a season-long loan with an option to buy next summer.

However, Manchester United would prefer to sell Zirkzee directly, but they must first find a replacement before the summer transfer window closes.

Although Zirkzee appears to be on the verge of leaving, Meulensteen still said he hopes to see Rashford get a second chance under Carrick.

The winger initially seemed set for a permanent move to Barcelona, but Barcelona ultimately turned to pursue Anthony Gordon, who will also return to Manchester.

Rashford has also received interest from Turkey, but Meulensteen believes the 28-year-old can still offer a lot to his boyhood club.

"I've always supported Marcus because I know how he came through," he said.

"As an academy player, he came all the way through the ranks. These players who come through the ranks have a special Manchester United gene in them."

"What happened with Marcus is interesting. Did he lose his love for the club, or did he lose his love for the manager he was working with at the time?"

"I think it needs a good conversation between Michael and Marcus, because I believe Michael recognizes Marcus's ability and he can still make a difference."

"If that's the case, and they agree on how best to use Marcus, then he still has a chance to stay. I don't see why not."

Meulensteen continued: "Some people will say he should leave because he's gone astray, and there might still be some resentment."

"But if Marcus comes back and performs, scoring a few crucial goals, everyone will be back on his side."
