Ibrahim Musa Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation, announced his resignation on Thursday, according to L'Équipe. The NFF is currently facing accusations of corruption and mismanagement, while the national team's poor performance in recent years has also intensified pressure on the organization.

Gusau, 62, stated at a press conference held at the NFF headquarters in Abuja: "I have decided to resign as President of the Nigeria Football Federation."

Gusau has served as President of the Nigeria Football Federation since 2022, and his resignation comes just one month before the next NFF general election. He also revealed that several other NFF board members would resign but did not specify the exact number. Secretary General Mohammed Sanusi has also confirmed his resignation.

The Nigeria Football Federation is currently under investigation regarding the alleged misuse of 17 billion naira, approximately 10.9 million euros, in government funds. According to several Nigerian media reports, the Nigerian State Security Service is investigating how these funds were used.

This funding was allocated by the Nigerian government in 2024 and was originally intended to settle outstanding payments owed to national team players and staff. However, Nigerian national team players have repeatedly protested publicly over unpaid wages and bonuses.

Beyond financial issues, Nigerian national teams have suffered significant athletic setbacks in recent years.

The most recent controversy involves Nigeria's failure to qualify for the 2027 Women's World Cup. As 10-time African Women's Cup of Nations champions, Nigeria lost 0-1 to Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2024 African Women's Cup of Nations, then lost 1-2 to South Africa in the World Cup playoff.

This marks Nigeria's first absence from the Women's World Cup since its inception in 1991.

The men's team situation is equally concerning. Nigeria has failed to qualify for two consecutive World Cups—2022 and 2026.

However, Gusau defended his tenure before resigning, attributing the NFF's financial difficulties to Nigeria's domestic economic challenges and currency exchange rate fluctuations.
