According to Spanish media outlet Marca, Llorente's contract extension talks with Atletico Madrid have made positive progress. The Spanish international is one of four World Cup winners in Atletico Madrid's squad and a key player in both the club's tactical plans and Simeone's system. Both sides are currently moving towards a contract renewal.

Llorente's current contract expires in June 2027, and the club hopes to further extend their cooperation.

Since the beginning of last season, Atletico Madrid has been in communication with Llorente's uncle and agent, Julio Llorente, to push for a contract renewal.

Llorente's current contract was last renewed in 2021, when he was one of the key players who helped Simeone's Atletico Madrid win their second La Liga title in club history.

Over the past five years, Llorente's standing within the team has continuously grown.

Both on the pitch and in the dressing room, his importance has been increasing. In the seven years since joining Atletico Madrid, he has established himself as a crucial member of the team and celebrated his 300th official appearance for Atletico Madrid last Sunday.

To commemorate this milestone, Atletico Madrid presented Llorente with a commemorative plaque, personally handed to him by club president Enrique Cerezo.

With Griezmann's departure, Llorente's position in Atletico Madrid's captaincy hierarchy has also risen further. He is currently the team's fourth captain. If the club ultimately transfers Gimenez before the window closes, Llorente could move up to third captain.

In fact, Llorente has worn the captain's armband in several matches this season. Now, after more than seven years at Atletico Madrid, he has become a player with significant influence in the team's dressing room.

The last major contract of his career

For Llorente, this contract renewal could also be the last major contract of his career.

Marca revealed that Llorente had previously stated he would not extend his career indefinitely. However, it is certain that in the next stage of his career, he still hopes to continue playing for Atletico Madrid.

Over the years, Llorente has won La Liga with Atletico Madrid and the World Cup with the Spanish national team.

Now he has one important dream remaining – to help Atletico Madrid win the Champions League.

As contract extension talks between the two sides gradually progress, Llorente will have more time to pursue this goal.

For Atletico Madrid, retaining such an experienced player who possesses both quality and dressing room influence is undoubtedly an important part of the team's future plans.
