Scott McTominay has reassured fans that he is "fine" after reports emerged that he will undergo heart surgery. The 29-year-old Napoli star is expected to have the procedure after being diagnosed with benign minor heart arrhythmia.

On Wednesday evening, the Scottish midfielder attended the prestigious Serie A Golden Ball awards, essentially the Italian equivalent of the PFA Player of the Year award.

Speaking to reporters at the event, McTominay said: "I'm fine. This surgery has been planned for a long time between me and the club.

"We discussed it during pre-season. I'll be out for a few weeks."

Arrhythmia can be treated with a procedure called radiofrequency ablation, which uses electrical pulses to destroy the part of the heart causing abnormal heart rhythm.

McTominay is expected to miss only a few weeks rather than months, but this means he will miss the first four matches under Scotland's new head coach Steve Clarke.

The Scottish national team posted a brief statement on social media, saying: "Get well soon, Scott. We look forward to seeing you back in a Scotland shirt soon."

So far this season, McTominay has started both of Napoli's Serie A matches.

The key player completed 90 minutes in the opening 2-0 victory over Genoa and then played for 56 minutes against Como last Sunday.

McTominay came through Manchester United's academy under José Mourinho, making 255 appearances for the Red Devils before joining Napoli in 2024.

When asked this week if a reunion with Mourinho might be possible, McTominay said: "If José Mourinho called me to sign a contract with Real Madrid, to be honest, I would consider it."

For now, the midfielder's focus is on returning to the pitch for Napoli as soon as possible.
