Manchester United left one former star in the dark when he reportedly discovered his squad snub via social media

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero was devastated to discover he'd been left out of the squad via social media in 2020. The former Argentina stopper moved to Old Trafford from Sampdoria in 2015 but endured six uneventful years with the English giants.

Having been a regular at club and country level during the earlier stages of his career, Romero was originally brought in as backup for David de Gea. However, he was rarely used by United in higher-priority competitions and made just 61 appearances for the club.

His United tenure hit a new low ahead of the 2020/21 season when he was left out of their Premier League squad. This came after ESPN reported he was priced out of a move away, with Everton refusing to pay the £10million exit fee United allegedly insisted upon.

Having made 17 appearances in all competitions for United the previous campaign, Romero found himself entirely sidelined in the 2020/21 campaign. The South American failed to record a single outing for the club and was finally allowed to leave on a free in 2021 when he joined Venezia.

Romero, 39, won the Europa League, FA Cup and EFL Cup during his stint at Old Trafford. However, his squad snub left a bitter taste in the mouth of those closest to the goalkeeper.

The matter was made worse by speculation Romero had learnt of that development through social media. And the rejection led to his partner going public herself to dig the club out over their tactics.

"He helped the team reach four finals/semi-finals and then was left on the bench only to lose them all," wrote Romero's wife, Eliana, on Instagram at the time. "It is time for them to return the opportunity and let him go. RESPECT FOR ONCE!!!

The Toffees were one of several suitors reportedly interested in a move for Romero on deadline day in 2021. However, the Liverpool outfit weren't prepared to pay the supposed £10m price tag attached to the then-34-year-old.

Romero's place in the United pecking order suffered at the time after Dean Henderson returned to the club. That left him and veteran Lee Grant as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's preferred backups behind De Gea in both the Premier League and Champions League.

In another Instagram post, Eliana wrote: "It is a very sad day because he desired the chance to go to another club. He has worked hard every day for this, because he gives his all for United and I think that his chances of playing for United have gone down.

"This doesn't sound right to me. It doesn't appear honest or professional or serious that they have to let him go. I am very sad because of this."
