On September 8th, Moroccan international Sofyan Amrabat announced on social media that he would not accept call-ups to the Moroccan national team while the current head coach remains in charge.

Amrabat's statement on social media:

"Representing the Moroccan national team is the greatest honor of my career.

Twelve years ago, I was called up to the national team for the first time. Since then, I have always given my all for my country and have always been proud to wear the national team jersey. My love for Morocco and everything this team represents to me will never change.

This is a very difficult decision, but I can no longer continue playing for the national team while the current head coach is in charge. Therefore, I will no longer accept national team call-ups as long as he remains the head coach.

Out of respect for the national team and everyone involved, I choose not to publicly disclose the reasons behind this decision.

I want to make it clear: I am not retiring from international football, nor am I closing the door on playing for Morocco again.

To my teammates, my brothers, and all the staff, I wish you all the best. I will continue to be the biggest supporter of this team, backing you with the same passion I have always shown on the field.

Thank you to the Moroccan fans for all the love and support you have always given me.

Current head coach Walid Regragui took over the Moroccan team in September 2022, leading them to the World Cup quarter-finals, where they faced France. Under his leadership, Amrabat started only one World Cup match (the final group stage match against Haiti) and came on as a substitute twice.
