US Expected to Host 2028 Copa América Following 2026 World Cup

Following the successful co-hosting of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, CONMEBOL and CONCACAF are seriously considering deepening their cooperation. According to multiple media reports, the United States has emerged as a top contender to host the 2028 Copa América, though this proposal has sparked considerable controversy among fans.

The 2026 World Cup expanded to 48 teams and was held across 16 cities in North America. The event attracted fans from around the world and fostered exchanges between host cities and supporters from various countries. For example, Boston built strong relations with Scottish fans, with the president of the Boston Red Sox even sending a thank-you letter to the Scottish Football Association.

Against this backdrop, Copa América organizers hope to capitalize on the World Cup's success. As early as December 2025, The Athletic revealed that CONCACAF and CONMEBOL had begun discussions about the United States hosting the 2028 Copa América. The 2024 Copa América was also held in the United States, where Argentina defeated Colombia 1-0 with a goal from Lautaro Martínez in extra time, securing their 16th Copa América title.

Beyond the United States, Argentina and Ecuador are also listed as potential host countries. However, according to the latest report from Brazilian media Estadão, negotiations between the United States and relevant parties have reached an advanced stage. The tournament is expected to follow the 2024 format, featuring 10 South American teams and 6 CONCACAF teams.

If approved, the United States would host three major international tournaments in four years: the 2024 Copa América, the 2026 World Cup, and the 2028 Copa América.

However, scheduling presents a significant challenge. The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics open on July 14, and the Copa América is traditionally held in summer, so organizers will need to coordinate schedules to prevent conflicts between the two major events.

Additionally, issues from the 2024 Copa América remain unresolved. Multiple teams criticized the poor quality of grass on certain pitches. Since many US stadiums primarily host NFL games and use artificial turf, temporary natural grass installations caused adaptation problems. US international Weston McKennie publicly criticized some pitches as being "bumpy."

However, the 2026 World Cup saw significant improvement in this regard.

Another concern stems from the 2024 Copa América final. A large number of ticketless fans stormed the field at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, delaying kickoff by 75 minutes. The US is clearly determined to prevent similar incidents.

Fan opinion remains divided on hosting the Copa América again.

Some fans worry that the Copa América is becoming a tournament perpetually held in the United States. One fan said: "The Copa América will eventually become like the Gold Cup, always held in the US, which is unfortunate."

Others acknowledge that CONCACAF teams benefit from facing strong South American opposition, but argue against playing long-term at home. "We need to play at the high altitudes of South America and in passionate away environments; staying home won't provide our national team enough competitive challenge."

Some fans support deeper integration between the continental federations: "We should permanently transform the Copa América into a joint CONMEBOL-CONCACAF tournament, making it a major competition comparable to the Euros."

However, South American fans expressed concerns: "As a South American fan, this troubles me. Due to economic factors, the US may host tournaments increasingly often, and South American football's traditional home advantage is gradually eroding."
