SPORT1 chief reporter Stefan Kumberger and SPORT1 reporter Manfred Zeltbauer discussed Neuer's performance in a new episode of the SPORT1 podcast "World Cup Locker Room."

Before the FIFA World Cup began, much was made of Neuer's aura. There was talk of the intimidation strikers felt when facing him, and of the calmness and security the Bayern Munich goalkeeper projected, as well as his ability to transmit this confidence to his teammates. It was precisely for this reason that national coach Nagelsmann recalled the 36-year-old goalkeeper from his retirement from the German national team, despite the risk to team chemistry.

But after the group stage, it is clear: the anticipated effect has yet to materialize. Where is the aura?

SPORT1 chief reporter Stefan Kumberger and SPORT1 reporter Manfred Zeltbauer discussed this issue in a new episode of the SPORT1 podcast "World Cup Locker Room."

Three saves and four goals conceded – Neuer's FIFA World Cup statistics so far look rather disappointing. Nagelsmann said on MagentaTV: "For Manuel, this is an extremely frustrating situation, as he still hasn't had the chance to make that crucial save. Those shots were very difficult to handle."

The goalkeeper has had to pick the ball out of the net more often than expected. There have been few real opportunities for him to showcase his ability. Even after conceding the second goal against Ecuador, a debate arose: could that ball have been saved?

SPORT1 chief reporter Stefan Kumberger said: "In my opinion, this is not purely a goalkeeper's mistake." But he added: "However, he is not entirely blameless either. He was involved in this goal. Raum and Jonathan Tah also bear some responsibility."

Neuer's reaction after the match was therefore particularly telling.

Neuer Denies Responsibility

When asked if he was responsible for the goal, he briefly replied "no," then explained his view of the situation in detail. Kumberger said: "The longer someone defends themselves, the more angles people have to scrutinize."

In Kumberger's opinion, Neuer's handling of the mistake was unsurprising: "We're already used to this at Munich." Zeltbauer added: "To me, it just seems too defensive and lacks self-reflection."

Kumberger, however, countered: "Perhaps it is precisely this almost paranoid personality that has made him one of the greatest goalkeepers in history."

Where is the Aura?

It has been a long time since the German national team kept a clean sheet in a FIFA World Cup match – that was in the 1-0 victory over Argentina in the 2014 final.

However, in Zeltbauer's view, it's not just the goals conceded that matter. "There were two other dangerous situations that showed the team's coordination was poor, and Neuer didn't project that strong sense of security either."

His question remains: "Where is that aura that was talked about so much?" Kumberger added: "This aura effect simply hasn't appeared yet. The fact is, aura alone cannot stop a ball."

Both podcast hosts agree, however, that there is no need to discuss the goalkeeper position at the moment, and the German national team is not questioning it internally.

Nevertheless, the external perception remains: Nagelsmann's risky recall of Neuer has not yet delivered the results he hoped for.
