According to Bild, German legend Mertesacker commented on the Italian national team, which has missed three consecutive World Cups, during a ZDF studio program following a Germany match, delivering a scathing assessment of the former powerhouse.

During the program, the host raised Italy's absence from the World Cup. Mertesacker stated bluntly: "They don't even deserve our discussion."

Mertesacker elaborated: "Look at how this team has changed over the years. Twenty years ago, when we lost to them in the World Cup semi-finals, they were a world-class team. Twenty years later, today, you have to search for a long time to find a truly top player."

Another guest, Kramer, expressed that he still loves Italian football and hopes Italy can return to the World Cup stage. He lamented that many young fans don't even know Italy was once a World Cup champion.
