On 29 June, South Korea's Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Choi Hwi-young, announced a special audit of the Korea Football Association (KFA) following the men's national team's group-stage elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

According to Yonhap News, Choi posted on social media on 29 June: "To identify the reasons for South Korean football's disappointing performance, address public concerns, and establish the facts, I will conduct a special audit." He announced that an investigation committee including external experts would be formed to uncover the causes of the KFA's long-standing mismanagement and negligence. The ministry warned that any unfairness, dereliction of duty, or illegal activities discovered during the investigation would be pursued strictly according to the law.

Choi also stated: "Based on the investigation results, I will publish a white paper and disclose it transparently to the public, so this painful lesson becomes the foundation for reform and a turning point for South Korean football's future." He addressed external concerns about the KFA's presidential election, saying that while the election would proceed according to existing regulations, the ministry understands the public's urgent demands for change and cannot proceed as before.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will also establish a tip-off hotline for the special audit.
