According to US media reports, two years ago, Orlando Hill was selling his clothes to help his family make ends meet. Today, he saved two penalties, keeping four-time FIFA World Cup champions Germany out of the FIFA World Cup.

Paraguay created a major upset at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday, eliminating four-time champions Germany in the Round of 32 via a penalty shootout. The match focused on the goalkeeper who was largely unknown to most of the football world before this tournament. Orlando Hill made 5 saves in 120 minutes and saved two penalties in the shootout, helping Paraguay reach the Round of 16 for the first time since 2010, and also making Paraguay the first team in FIFA World Cup history to defeat Germany in a penalty shootout.
Orlando Daniel Hill Nordín was born on June 11, 2000, in San Lorenzo, Paraguay. He came through the youth systems of Club 13 de Junio and San Lorenzo, then joined Argentinian club San Lorenzo on loan in December 2023, making a permanent transfer in January 2025. Standing at 1.98 meters tall, he initially played as a forward or midfielder in his youth before switching to goalkeeper. In Paraguayan football, José Luis Chilavert and Justo Villar both left legendary legacies in this position.
Just two years before he became a FIFA World Cup hero, Hill reportedly sold his clothes to help his family with financial difficulties. A touching social media post he made during that tough period, which went largely unnoticed at the time, resurfaced and went viral online after his FIFA World Cup performance made headlines.
Hill made his senior national team debut on September 9, 2025, when Paraguay defeated Peru 1-0 in a friendly match. He had only made 6 appearances for the national team before being selected for Paraguay's final FIFA World Cup squad. His start to the tournament was not smooth, as Paraguay lost 1-4 to co-hosts USA in their opening match. He then responded by keeping two consecutive clean sheets: he saved all 6 shots on target in a 1-0 win against Turkey; and he made 5 saves in a 0-0 draw against Australia. With these results, Paraguay advanced as one of the 8 best third-placed teams.
Against Germany, Hill first saved Havertz's initial penalty, then denied Waldschmidt's shot, before Jonathan Tah sent the decisive penalty wide. Hill was voted Player of the Match by fans. Besiktas and Valencia are reportedly already eyeing him. The goalkeeper who was selling clothes two years ago has now captured the attention of the entire football world.
