On July 1, Mexico defeated Ecuador 2-0 to advance to the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

Mexico coach Javier Aguirre stated at the press conference that defeating Ecuador was the most important victory of his coaching career, and he believes the team can go even further in the FIFA World Cup.

Aguirre said: "I once defeated Brazil in the Copa América, as well as Italy and other strong teams, but no victory can compare to today’s, because this was achieved at home, in front of our fans."

Mexico defeated Ecuador 2-0 that night to advance to the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, having exited early from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Aguirre praised the players' performance but also reminded the team that he is already thinking about Sunday's match against DR Congo or England.

Aguirre said: "When I coached Egypt, I knew the DR Congo players; they have several stars in Europe and are very physically strong. As for England, there is no need to say much—they have world-class players and the best league in the world, the Premier League. I will send someone to observe their match tomorrow; we want to be fully prepared."

Although Mexico dominated at the Estadio Azteca that day, Aguirre admitted that the performance was not flawless and expressed dissatisfaction with the team's failure to capitalize on counter-attacking opportunities in the second half.

Aguirre said: "Defeating Ecuador was not easy, but we were brave, and the team managed the game well. Everyone played intelligently in the second half, but we missed several counter-attacking opportunities that the opponent gave us."

Aguirre, who always enjoys joking with the media, revealed that to complete this perfect day, all he needed was a glass of whiskey, but he did not have one in his room. He said: "Yesterday my third grandson was born, and he brought good luck." This refers to a Mexican tradition in which children are born to bring good fortune to the family.

According to Aguirre, the team he coaches deserves to be where they are now in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, and they will continue striving for further progress. If Mexico defeats DR Congo or England, they will match their best FIFA World Cup performance, achieved twice when they hosted the tournament in 1970 and 1986.

Aguirre concluded: "We are highly motivated. First, we need to help our tired players recover, and then we will continue working."
