On July 1st, in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match between the USA and Bosnia and Herzegovina, American forward Balogun scored a goal for his team in the first half but was sent off with a red card in the second half.

According to statistics, in FIFA World Cup history, host teams have had players sent off in the knockout stage 5 times previously.

In the 1962 FIFA World Cup semi-final, Chilean player Honorino Landa of the host team was sent off against Brazil; in the 1986 FIFA World Cup quarter-final, Mexican player Aguirre of the host team was red-carded against West Germany; in the 1994 FIFA World Cup Round of 16, American player Clavijo of the host team was sent off against Brazil.

In the 1998 FIFA World Cup, host team France had players sent off twice in the knockout stage. In the semi-final against Croatia, Blanc was red-carded. In the final against Brazil, Desailly was sent off in the second half after receiving two yellow cards.

With Balogun being sent off with a red card in this match, he became the 6th player from a host team to receive a red card in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup, and also the second American player to be sent off in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage since Clavijo in 1994.
