According to Japan's NTV, in June 2026, a male university student was arrested in Kurihara City, Miyagi Prefecture, on suspicion of possessing dried cannabis. It was found that the student was a member of the Tohoku Gakuin University football team.

The incident occurred on June 28, when police apprehended six men and women, aged 20 to 25, in a commercial facility parking lot in Kurihara City, Miyagi Prefecture, all on suspicion of illegally possessing dried cannabis.

Among those involved, 20-year-old male university student Atsuki Kakitani, residing in Wakabayashi Ward, Sendai City, was confirmed by the Tohoku Gakuin University official website to be a current student. The university stated that it would handle the matter with a cautious and strict attitude, imposing appropriate disciplinary action.

Sources revealed that Atsuki Kakitani is a member of the university's Athletic Association football club.

This football team was originally scheduled to represent Miyagi Prefecture in the Emperor's Cup in August.

Police stated that all six arrested individuals were acquaintances.

At this stage, as the investigation is still ongoing and disclosing confessions would impede the inquiry, the police have not yet announced whether the individuals involved have pleaded guilty.
